Thoughts of Sadguru Sivanandamurthy garu, “Our Responsibility Towards Society”

Selfless service
Sadguru Sivanandamurthy garu always worked for society, never limiting himself to personal needs, career or family interests.

Living in harmony with nature
He wanted our way of life to be in tune with nature, so that humans, animals and birds can all live happily and peacefully.

Yoga Vidya for everyone
He worked with the resolve to make Yoga Vidya available to everyone which is attained through the sadhana of so many births.

Staying close to the middle class
To be accessible to the middle-class people of society, he resigned from his job in line with his ideals and chose the path of service.

Dharma behind Earnings
The wealth we earn must have dharma and ethics behind it. It is not enough to be comfortable ourselves; every person should grow into a good citizen.

What are we doing for the country and society?
We must question ourselves. Our work should not be only a job, and a job is not merely a livelihood. We should shape ourselves into capable people and work for social change.

Awareness of democracy
We have moved towards democracy since our independence. True awareness of democracy arises only when every citizen knows where the taxes they pay go and how they are used.

From Mediocracy to Meritocracy
We should ask whether talent and merit get due priority today. Our society should move towards a meritocracy.

Grow as Super Citizens- Every person in society should grow into a responsible citizen. The qualities of such citizens are:

  • Powerful Positive Persons: People with positive thinking and strength.
  • Protective Residents: Residents responsible for protecting their surroundings.
  • Supportive Neighbors: Neighbors who support one another.
  • Vigilant Localities: Local communities who stay alert.
  • Welcoming Socialites: Sociable people who warmly welcome everyone.
  • Civilians with Civic Sense: Citizens who are aware of their civic duties.
  • Commoners with Common Sense: Ordinary people who act with general knowledge and discernment.

Identify role models in society
Who are the great people in our society? Who is stepping forward to do good work? We should keep learning about them. Such people are the ideal Super Citizens.

Responsible citizens with freedom
We should use our freedom wisely and live as prominent citizens, with responsibility towards society. This is Sadguru’s aspiration.

Our existence should be useful to society
“What are we to society?” What are we doing for society, and what benefit does society get from our existence? Everyone should ask themselves this.

Social responsibility brings boundless punyam
Every good deed done responsibly towards society brings immense merit. Living in a spirit of service gives life true meaning.

From 11 October, our mission in every family
The mission should reach every family. Awareness of social responsibility, values, culture and service should be nurtured in each one. Children should learn family values: their family, their relatives, their relationships with elders, family lineage, heritage and traditions. That is how our culture and family values pass to the next generations. Our goal is to put Sadguru’s ideals into practice. Our lives are not limited to our own families. Each of us should contribute to the growth of our family, society and nation by nurturing good values in every family and shaping each person into a responsible citizen, so that all of us become Super Citizens. It is not only for ourselves; let us live for our family, our society and our nation.

Sarvam Paravasham Dukham, Sarvam Atmavasham Sukham:
Sarvam paravasham dukham: When our life depends on others, we must live by their likes and wishes, and this brings sorrow. Placing our happiness in others’ hands takes away our peace of mind.
Sarvam atmavasham sukham: True happiness comes when we control our mind, thoughts, desires and actions. Living with self-discipline and making decisions with dharma and discernment brings peace of mind.
